The one genuine danger: traffic

The statistically dominant risk to travelers is road traffic, not crime. Cross streets slowly and predictably (walk, don't dart), wear a helmet on any motorbike you ride — including as a passenger — and skip night driving on mountain roads (Ha Giang, the passes to Da Lat). If you self-ride, an international driving permit recognized for motorbikes is legally required; insurance without one can be void.

Scams worth knowing (small, not systemic)

Taxi meter tricks are rare now that Grab dominates — use the app where possible. The counterfeit-goods closed-shop and 'your bus is cancelled, book my tour' moves cluster around major bus terminals. Counterfeit or padded bills occasionally appear as change from large notes; check 500,000-đ notes. Everything else you read on forums is mostly folklore amplified by jet lag.

Money & valuables

Petty snatch-and-ride phone theft happens in the big cities from passing motorbikes — keep phones off the street-side table and out of back pockets in crowds. Hotel safes are broadly fine. Use ATMs attached to banks; decline dynamic currency conversion at card terminals (always pay in VND).

Health basics

Tap water: no. Ice in cities: generally fine (manufactured ice). Street food with queues and turnover is the safest bet. Rabies exists — any monkey, dog or cat bite that breaks skin deserves a clinic visit same-day; rabies vaccine access is good in cities.
